The protesters have been arrested and charged by police after having thrown a shoe at the Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao when he made a speech at Cambridge University. Shoes come in the way of a meter from the Chinese leader, as he came to the end of his speech. The demonstrator was arrested and has been accused of committing a public order offense. Groups of pro-Chinese supporters had stood at the entrance to the hall as Mr Wen arrived. Meanwhile, a group of protesters to oppose China's policies in Tibet were penned into a corner about 50 meters from the entrance.
"We know from previous down turns as a withdrawal to the narrow, short-term protectionist policies will only serve to deepen the global recession, and we must not let it happen again." Wen Jiabao and British Prime Minister has discussed measures to counter the economic slow down and increasing trade in Downing Street before meeting business leaders. Human rights were also on the agenda.
"Britain will continue through our ongoing dialogue to seek rapid progress towards international standards of human rights, and I want to encourage further dialogue about the Chinese government to resolve the underlying problems in Tibet," the Prime Minister said during a news conference. The first two days of Mr Wen visits were marred by noisy protests over human rights abuses in China and Tibet. He is on a tour of Europe, which also includes visits to Germany and Spain, but not France. He has reportedly snubbed the French because of a meeting last year between President Nicolas Sarkozy and the Dalai Lama, the Exiled spiritual leader of Tibet.
