Born 1 October 1921, just outside NYC in White Plains, New York, character veteran James Whitmore, the stalwart actor mainly known for his crime yarns and war action pictures, was the son of James Allen Whitmore and wife Florence Crane. Educated at Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut, he received his BA from Yale University in 1944 before serving with the Marines in World War II. After his discharge, he is prepared for the stage under the GI bill on the American Theater Wing, where he met first wife Nancy Mygatt. They still have three children together, including the actor James Whitmore Jr..
Applause and subsequent fame was brief and fairly quickly Whitmore both Broadway and film banners. The following appears in Peterborough, New Hampshire players in the summer of 1947 participated in the play "The milky Way," Whitmore made a promising Broadway debut as a Tech Sergeant Evans in "Command Decision" later that year. Whitmore was twice married to Nancy Mygatt. They first married in 1947 and the couple had three sons before their divorce in 1971. One of these sons, James III, has gone on to find success as a TV actor and director, under the name James Whitmore Jr. After the divorce from Mygatt, Whitmore married actress Audra Lindley from 1972 to 1979. He later remarried Mygatt, but they separated after two years. 2001 he married actress and author Noreen Nash, who is grandmother film actor Sebastian Siegel. Whitmore is also the granddaddy of Survivor: Gabon contestant Matty Whitmore. In his later years, Whitmore spent most of his summers in Peterborough, New Hampshire, engaged in the Peterborough Players. Although it is not always politically active, in 2007, Whitmore generated some publicity with his association with Barack Obama for U.S. president. In January 2008, Whitmore appeared in TV commercials for the first Freedom in the first fight to preserve the separation of church and state and protecting religious freedom.
