Google Inc released software on Wednesday that allows users of mobile phones and other wireless devices automatically share housing with family and friends. Users in 27 countries will be able to send its position to the other continuously, using Google Latitude. The control allows users to choose who receives information or to connect at any time, Google said on its website.
"Fun page, we recognize the sensitivity of geographical data, so we have built fine-grained privacy controls right in the program," Google said in a blog post announcing the service. "You not only control who can see the location, but also determine the position they see." Friends' homes can be tracked on a Google map, either from a phone or a PC. Google's new service, which corresponds to the service offered by privately owned held loopt.
Companies with Verizon Wireless, owned by Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc, which already offers loopt service which also works on the iPhone from Apple Inc. Latitude would work with Research In Motion Ltd's BlackBerry and devices running on Symbian S60 devices or Microsoft Corp. Windows Mobile and a T-1 Mobile phones running on Google's Android software. The software will run on Apple iPhone and iTouch, and a number of Sony Ericsson devices. In 2005 Google acquired but later closed, a site-specific finding service as text messages to mobile phone users to keep aware of their friends' doorsteps.
