"The Pink Panther 2" sneak into theaters this week with all the stealth mode of a monster truck with a bad muffler or Howie Mandel show. It's about excess and the extreme with some shred, splinter or speck of shade as volatile as the Pink Panther diamond and apparently Jeremy Irons confidence, but more about that later.
Steve Martin, back to Round 2 as Inspector Jacques Clouseau, is one of the authors, along with Scott Neustädter and Michael H. Weber. Maybe that is why Clouseau is in almost all contexts, not necessarily a bad thing, because really all film is, it will regardless of comedy Martin can squeeze from the moment - to talk about the analogy, the blood from a turnip thinking.
The cast is filled with experienced veterans who are not quite well with what they have asked to do, which is essential to play the right man or woman opposite Clouseau, as he leaves a swath of destruction, and every sight gag-known people in their wake . A sampling: Clouseau fall of the walls and down chimneys, burn up the drapes, wherever they are, juggling and dropping wine bottles; tripping, sliding, bumping and landing on something in their path, or close to it, crushing pope Miter and almost everything that can crush; destroy something crazy - all accompanied by a French accent that Martin seems to be talking with his mouth full of peanut butter .
It is a kind of desperation at work here - a "You laugh, or we continue to throw everything at you before you do" approach - it makes everything look a little sad or funny if you're the kind of entertained by train wrecks. Speaking of who Jeremy Irons - allows Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons. One of the finest dramatic actors of the day - see "Reversal of Fortune", "The French Lieutenant's Woman", "bride Revisited", while "The Lion King" - he comes up here in a small role as the notorious French fencing in Puffy a white shirt and riding pants.
Pink Panther 2 Trailer 2009
Director of this fine mess is 43-year-old Harald Zwart, the production notes tell us was the first Norwegian director shall be approved for the Directors Guild of America, which does not really say much about the history of American cinema, does it work? His first film, we said, was made when he was 8 Since then, he cut his comedy teeth on such fare as "Agent Cody Banks," so clearly he has a secret agent world. What is also clear is that while White may be the technical leader for the first frame, "Pink Panther 2" is defined by Martin to do exactly as he pleased for the next 90 or so minutes.
