Apple underwhelms at Macworld

Apple went out with a snivel at its last Macworld expo according to the Mac sincerely who gather gadgets every year. The company stayed on draft with no game changing-gadget - unlike previous shows where the iMac, ipod and iPhone were unveil. Instead, Apple announce a range of upgrade, with the most significant change being an end to copy limitations on music downloaded from iTunes. Apple lowered opportunity when it said this was its last Macworld along with news that chief executive Steve Jobs would not do the keynote address. Taking centre stage this time was Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, Phil Schiller, who did not "rock the house", according to Gartner analyst Van Baker.

 

Music fans who download songs from Apple's iTunes store will soon be able to play the track on other MP3 players and mobile phones as well as iPods, after Apple announce that it would be removing the anti-piracy encryption on all songs it sells. The announcement came at the Macworld technology show in San Francisco, where Apple was making its last-ever appearance. Prior to the result, rumors had swirled that Apple would launch a new "nano" version of is popular iPhone device, or a cheap ultra-portable laptop. But in a largely underwhelming keynote presentation, announcements focused instead on a variety of minor software improvements, and just one new gadget, a 17in MacBook Pro computer. Phil Schiller, senior vice president of marketing at Apple, gave the keynote presentation in the absence of chief executive Steve Jobs, who admitted earlier this week that he is suffering from health problems caused by a hormone imbalance .Schiller was welcomed onto the stage by consoling cheers and appreciation from the Apple faithful. "I'm really personally excited to be here today, and can't tell you how much I appreciate you turning up," he said.

TU(Tulsa university) Advances to No. 83 in U.S. News Ranking

The University of Tulsa has advanced its position among the top 100 national doctoral universities ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s 2009 guidebook, “America’s Best Colleges.”The U.S. News & World Report results, released today, rank TU 83rd out of 262 national doctoral universities, a classification developed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This marks TU’s highest ranking in the U.S. News report. Last year, the University was ranked 91st among the top 100.Among private schools listed in the top 100, TU ranked 47th in the 2009 guidebook.TU is the highest rated Oklahoma university, public or private, in this year’s U.S. News edition. Among the factors that determine the national doctoral university rankings, TU’s most marked change was a 25 percent decrease in the acceptance rate, which indicates the University was much more selective about admitting high performing students into its incoming class. This past weekend, Peggy and I had the delightful experience of watching a live performance of A Prairie Home Companion at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center sponsored by our very own KWGS. Garrison Keillor was a masterful emcee, and I found myself uplifted by his folksy charm, slightly ribald humor, and the inspirational folk and country music that are cornerstones of this legendary show. Being uplifted was good, and a welcome respite from the unsettled feeling I have had over the past many weeks because of the constant bad news stemming from the meltdown of the global credit markets.Bad news is unsettling, and in the midst of it we sometimes forget that uncertainty about the future is a constant in our lives. Economic calamity or not, we need to remember at times like this that today is just as uncertain as yesterday, and a thousand yesterdays before that. And tomorrow will give rise to new uncertainties heretofore unconsidered.

TU Renames Business College to Honor Collins

The University of Tulsa has renamed its business college as the Collins College of Business to honor the vision and leadership of Tulsa businessman Fulton Collins, who has chaired the TU Board of Trustees since 1997. TU President Steadman Upham made the surprise announcement during the University’s spring 2008 commencement ceremony held May 10 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Asus Shows a Tablet-Style Eee PC

Other computer manufacturers might think that the Tablet PC is dead, but Asus has their own ideas. During a press conference at CES 2009, Asus showed a prototype of EeePC T91 a convertible tablet-style notebook. Its 8.9-inch Revolving screen folded up to show a keyboard, such as any laptop or Notebook - it can rotate around and folded back over the keys, the device switches on a blackboard.

Unlike other tablets, Touch-sensitive means that you can use your finger (or fingers) to press the icons, select the text, and perform other mouse actions. You can also use the included styles, if you prefer. Also, unlike other tablets, the T91 would weigh only 2.1 pounds. It runs on Intel Atom Z520 processor, which means that the T91 will be relatively under drives, like other Netbook. It will probably be running a version of Linux, like other Eee PC and the prices will be low - in line with other Netbook, Asus representatives saying.The finger screen can also be used to select a movie from your hard disk or DVD drive, and then display it on the big screen, again without using the computer's main processor or pass through a long boot process.

Town shocked by fatal dog attack

Residents of a small town in the New South Wales Riverina are shocked by a dog attack this morning that killed a toddler and seriously injured her baby sister.A three-year-old girl was found dead and her 15-month-old sister is in Wagga Base Hospital with serious injuries after being attacked by four dogs at Whitton near Leeton.The female neighbour who was looking after the girls was also injured in the attack.The attack happened some time before 11:00am AEDT and neighbours were among those trying to rescue the injured.Whitton has a population of about 350 and police Inspector Tony Reneker says it is very bad news for the town. "Whitton is a small community and I'm sure that it'll affect a lot of people in that community," he said."It's a very, very sad occurrence and I feel for the family involved."Police originally said the dogs were family pets but they have now confirmed that the girls' parents had left them in the care of a friend at Whitton.Police describe the dogs as large cross-breeds and will apply to have the animals put down.Inspector Reneker says the dogs' owner is still in shock."Police haven't been able to speak to the owner of the dogs; she's still being treated at hospital," he said.The dead girl's name will be released when relatives are informed and police are preparing a report for the coroner.

And while no rockets are fired from the West Bank, 45 Palestinians have died there at Israel's hands this year alone. The issue is of course not just the vast disparity in weapons and power, but that one side is the occupier, the other the occupied.

Snow and Ice Festival in Harbin, China

 

The annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival has been held since 1963. It had been interrupted for a number of years during the Cultural Revolution until it was resumed in 1985

Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province of People's Republic of China, is one of the resources of snow and ice culture in the world. Geographically, it is located in Northeast China under the direct influence of the cold winter wind from Siberia. The average temperature in summer is 21.2 degrees Celsius, -16.8 degrees Celsius in winter. It can be as cold as - 38.1 degrees Celsius in winter.

Officially, the festival starts from January 5th and it lasts one month. However often the exhibitions open earlier and last longer, weather permitting. Ice sculpture decoration ranges from the modern technology of lasers to traditional ice lanterns. There are ice lantern park touring activities held in many parks in the city. Winter activities in the festival include Yabuli alpine skiing, winter-swimming in Songhua River, and the ice-lamp exhibition in Zhaolin Garden. Snow carving and ice and snow recreations are world famous.

The Harbin festival is one of the world's four largest ice and snow festivals, along with Japan's Sapporo Snow Festival, Canada's Quebec City Winter Carnival, and Norway's Ski Festival.

The 2007 festival featured the Canadian theme, in memoriam of Canadian doctor Norman Bethune. It also a Guinness Record of the largest snow sculpture: 250 metres long, 28 feet (8.5 m) high, using over 13,000 cubic metres of snow. The composition consisted of two parts: "Niagara Falls" and "Crossing the Bering Strait" (the latter depicting the migration of the First Nations)

NASA Issues Final Report On The Columbia Disaster

February 1, 2003 was a Saturday. It was shaping up as a slow news day. At the cable and broadcast network newsrooms the arrival and landing of Shuttle Columbia was just another small story--really not much more than a time filler on that winter's day are usually Saturdays.

There were five distinct events each with the potential to kill the crew.

• The first event with lethal potential was depressurization of the crew module, which started at or shortly after orbiter breakup.
  
  
• The second event with lethal potential was unconscious or deceased crew members exposed to a dynamic rotating load environment with nonconformal helmets and a lack of upper body restraint.
  
  
• The third event with lethal potential was separation from the crew module and the seats with associated forces, material interactions and thermal consequences. Seat restraints played a role in the lethality of this event.This event is the least understood due to limitations in current knowledge of mechanisms at this Mach number and altitude.
  
  
• The fourth event with lethal potential was exposure to near vacuum, aerodynamic accelerations and cold temperatures.
  
  
• The final event with lethal potential was ground impact.

The fallen crew of Space Shuttle Columbia now has an enduring memorial on another planet. When NASA's MER of full name of Mars Exploration Rover Spirit landed on Mars Jan. 3, 2004, it brought with it a small commemorative plaque bearing the seven astronauts. Spirit's landing area on Mars will now be known as the Columbia Memorial Station.



During this time of great joy for NASA, the Mars Exploration Rover team and the entire NASA family paused to remember our lost colleagues from the Columbia mission. NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe said. "To venture into space, into the unknown, is a calling heard by the bravest, most dedicated individuals."Since its flawless landing in Gusev Crater, Spirit has sent back several stunningly clear photos of its new home. Designed by MER ( Mars Exploration Rover ) engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the plaque was installed March 28, 2003, during pre-launch processing at Kennedy Space Center's Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility.

"This Images is Space Shuttle Columbia STS-107 damage becuse of this Space Shuttle coming reatern to Earth.A large piece of insulating foam from Columbia's external tank (ET) had come off during ascent and struck the leading edge of the left wing, causing critical damage."

Any insight can give here will be superficial at best. Still, struck by the separation of problem solving and survival that existed in astronaut training. This is loaded with conclusions and recommendations, but the truth is travel in pursuit of exploration is inherently dangerous. The astronauts knew this going in.Though the crew knew something was going wrong they never prepared for the rapid. Though their vehicle was modern their danger wasn't all that different from what faced Columbus, Lewis and Clark, Shackleton or anyone else who has pushed the physical limits of human knowledge.

• Kalpana Chawla :- 41, emigrated to the United States from India in 1980. She was chosen as an astronaut in 1994 after working at NASA's Ames Research Center in northern California. • Rick D. Husband :- 45, was an Air Force colonel from Amarillo, Texas. He was survived by his wife and two children. The baritone sang in a church choir for years and used to sing in barbershop quartets.Besides flying, Husband's other passion in life was singing. • William C. McCool :- 41, was a Navy commander who grew up in Lubbock, Texas. McCool was an experienced Navy pilot with more than 2,800 hours in flight. McCool was married with three sons. • Michael P. Anderson :- 43, was the son of an Air Force man and grew up on military bases. He traveled to Russia's Mir space station in 1998. The lieutenant colonel was a native of Spokane, Washintan. and was married with two daughters. He was flying for the Air Force when NASA chose him in 1994 as one of only a handful of black astronauts.He was in charge of Columbia's dozens of science experiments.
  
  
  
  
• David M. Brown :- 46, was a Navy captain, pilot and doctor. He became an astronaut in 1996. The Arlington, Va., native joined the Navy after a medical internship, then went on to fly the A-6E Intruder and F-18. Columbia's mission was his first spaceflight.
  
  
  
  
• Laurel B. Clark :- 41, was a diving medical officer aboard submarines and then a flight surgeon before she became an astronaut in 1996.The Racine, Wis., native was married to a NASA doctor and had a son.Her role on Columbia was to help with science experiments.
  
  
  
  
• Ilan Ramon :- 48, was a colonel in Israel's air force and the first Israeli in space. Ramon fought in the Yom Kippur War 1973 and the Lebanon War 1982 and served for years as a fighter pilot. He had a wife and four children who lived in Tel Aviv.His mother and grandmother survived the Auschwitz death and his father fought for Israel's statehood alongside grandfather.He was chosen as Israel's first astronaut in 1997, then moved to Houston the next year to train.

Billu Barber first look and interview

Billu Barber is an upcoming Bollywood film starring Irrfan Khan and Lara Dutta in the lead roles, and Shahrukh Khan for the first time in a supporting role. the film also features Om Puri, Rajpal Yadav and Asrani in supporting roles with guest appearances by actresses Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra. The film, which is a remake of the hugely successful Malayalam film Kadha Parayumbol, has already been remade in Tamil as Kuselan starring Pasupathy and Rajinikanth but met a poor box office reception. The film is scheduled to release on February 13, 2009.

Production

Director Priyadarshan signed on actors Shahrukh Khan and Lara Dutta to essay pivotal roles in the film. Initially, these roles were offered to Akshay Kumar and Tabu. However, Kumar didn't find the film interesting and opted out of the project whilst Tabu refused the film as she didn't want to work with Irrfan Khan. The director then offered Kumar's and Tabu's role to Shahrukh Khan and Amisha Patel respectively, and both of them agreed to do the film.

Patel later opted out of the film as she felt her character's role was not substantial enough and sources had indicated that Juhi Chawla was signed on for the role. In April 2008, the director announced that he had signed on Lara Dutta to essay the role of the barber's wife. The cast began filming for the project on April 8, 2008 and according to Shahrukh Khan, "the film is a sweet story of friendship...quite similar to the bond shared between Krishna and Sudama." The film also features Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone & Priyanka Chopra, who are reportedly doing item numbers in the film.

Samsung Thinnest Ever HD T.V. At CES

CES Expo in Las Vegas and already leaks game is started with Samsung executives tell me that they will launch a new HD-TV, which is less than 6.5cm thick and 2 cm thinner than it appeared together on last year's CES show. Samsung is to reveal a flat screen HDTV measure ling found that 6.5-inch on this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. TV is reported to be between 6.5mm and 7mm over its width, and has an LED (Light Emitting Diode) backlight. The new models will incorporate Samsung's Motion Plus technology (200Hz) and Samsung have LED backlighting, but the latest model, Samsung has built tuner or receiver, according to Electronista spot models will come with a separate external tuner device.

PC World reported today that Samsung has managed to cram an LED-backlight HDTV in a home that is more than 6.5mm thick. Do not sneeze or breathe too hard on this. We have previously covered Samsung HDTV sets, which is scheduled to make an appearance in 2009, but this super slim one was not on the list, which means that the most likely prototype feed "thinnest HDTV" category, which is likely to order an exercise at CES 2009 this week. The current record holder for the thinnest HDTV Philips with 8mm LCD prototype that was shown in Berlin last year on the IFA electronics show. Sony, however, is the price to be thin second retail TV, a set of 9.9mm, which is already available on store shelves.
