Meira Kumar is first dalit woman to preside over Lok Sabha

Creating history of sorts, the 15th Lok Sabha is all set to unanimously elect former Union minister Meira Kumar as Speaker on Wednesday.

Kumar's race is only one candidate. Nomination on his behalf by parties across the political spectrum have been filed. And the first Dalit to become the first woman to be president.

The nomination of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Opposition leader LK, including leaders of all parties had signed, Advani.

Congress and the BJP to the post of chairman of reaching an understanding, as the conference vice-president's post, the saffron party will be known.

Sources say that the BJP Karia Munda, Jharkhand and the former Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government to nominate a tribal leader said, have decided, for this post.

The 64- year- old Meira Kumar, who will be elected by a voice vote on Wednesday, termed her nomination to the Speaker's post as a "historic moment for the country". "It is a historic moment. It is a very overwhelming moment for me," Kumar, a five-term member of the Lok Sabha, said. "It is a historic moment as a woman has been considered for this important and august post." A UPA delegation, led by Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee, submitted 13 sets of nomination papers proposing Kumar's name to Lok sabha secretary general P.D.T Achary.

She quit the Indian Foreign Service in 1985 to join politics. The soft- spoken Kumar first joined the government as a deputy minister in the P.V. Narasimha Rao ministry. She was made a Cabinet minister in 2004.

A person who doesn't know that our present Speaker belongs to that particular community, may also come to know.
is that the only thing to be highlighted?
Can't we say that decently ?
THE DECISION TO MAKE A WOMAN SPEAKER by CONGRESS PARTY was really admirable!
