How google flu trends work?
We have found that some keywords are good indicators of influenza activity in the United States. Flu Google Trends uses aggregated Google search data to calculate possible influenza activity in a state of near-real time.
In response to requests from public health officials about the current swine influenza outbreaks, we built an experimental model for Mexico. You will see our tentative estimates of the experimental Flu Development in Mexico since. We hope this may shed more light on possible influenza activity in the states in Mexico.
Unlike Google Trends for Flu USA, Experimental Flu Trends for Mexico were not built with historical data on flu symptoms. This means that the models have not been checked against the actual historical influenza data from Mexico and thus the estimates you see in Mexico are unconfirmed. The models for Mexico is based on aggregated search is likely to be associated with flu-like illness
