'People's Car' Tata Nano launch in mumbai

On Monday 23-3-2009 History will be created in Mumbai when Tata Motors launches the world's least expensive car. They can expect to own a car that comes at a price between Rs 1.20 lakh and Rs 1.30 lakh, depending on the version of the Nano, but the order will start in April second week.

Since its launch in Mumbai, Nano will be displayed on the company's dealers from the first week in April, when orders came from the following week. Process and other details of the Rs one lakh car will be announced on the day of launch. The Nano is eight per cent shorter than Maruti 800, the cheapest car on offer now in India, for bumper to bumper length, but is 21 per cent more spacious, Tata had said in the Auto Expo. The 623cc Nano comes with a 33 HP petrol engine, but a diesel variant will also be launched soon.

"People's Car" by Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata, Nano commercial launch marks a milestone in a journey that was replete with controversies, hurdles and criticism from competitors.

Dealer sources said, if the company keeps the ex-factory cost Rs 1 lakh, as promised by Tata, the base system model can easily have an on-road cost Rs 1.20 lakh after taxes as Excise duty, Education Tax and Road Tax, together with transportation cost, local taxes, insurance and registration fees and a lifetime parking fees.

Last month, Tata Motors had appointed a public sector lender State Bank of India as the only booking agent for the world's least expensive car from the stable of Tatas. Booking amount is set to R-70000.

The Nano comes in three variants - standard and two deluxe models with air conditioning.
