Manglore 3rd April The arrested, include Rashid Malbari alias 'Double' (38), Sahil Ismail Sheik (23), both from Thane in Maharashtra, Sayaf T A (25), a student from Kasargod in Kerala, Mohammad Hashin (28), driver of the car from Kasargod and Sahib Ibrahim (27), a resident of Kaup Padu in Udupi district of Karnataka.
Karnataka home minister VS Acharya had said on Thursday that Varun Gandhi, BJP candidate from Pilibhit Lok Sabha constituency, was on the hit-list of All.
Reports said Rashid, who had been atlarge for nearly 13 years, was sent by Shakeel to eliminate right-wing leader and Sree Rama Sena Chief Pramod Muthalik and BJP youth leader Varun Gandhi, both of whom had given hate speeches against a minority community recently. This was revealed after a cell phone call from Chhota Shakeel was intercepted by the IB officials.
"The nexus appears to be too far-fetched as it was practically impossible for the gangster to make it all the way from Mangalore to Pilibhit in less than 12 hours" said sources from IB.
Intelligence officials admitted they had received inputs about threats to important leaders during the Lok Sabha elections but there was "nothing in particular on Varun Gandhi".
Mr Hosur said if police was able to take the arrested into their custody they would be quizzed about their plans. ''We have some clue after we questioned them on Monday before they were produced in the court. We are hoping that the court will give custody of the five to us,'' Sources said once they were given police custody sleuths from Mumbai and Intelligence Bureau would be arriving in the city to interrogate them.
