She has so far released eleven albums, appeared on a number of soundtracks, and helped launch a new interest in bluegrass music in the United States. Her soundtrack findings have led to further popularity, including the Grammy-winning O Brother, Where Art You? soundtrack, an album also credited with raising awareness of America's interest in bluegrass and the Cold Mountain soundtrack, which led to her performance in the 2004 Academy Awards. During her career she has won 26 Grammy Awards-more than any other female artist.

Krauss' debut solo album followed soon after her first group album with Union Station to freeways in 1989. Many traditional bluegrass numbers appeared on the album along with a bluegrass interpretation of Common Brothers' "Midnight Rider". Krauss' contract with Round required her to switch between to release a solo album and an album with Union Station, and she released the solo album I have the old feelings in 1990. It was her first album to rise into the Billboard charts, peaking in five and seventy-based chart. The album was also a remarkable point in her career when she earned her first Grammy Award, the single "Steel Rails" was her first single tracked by Billboard, and the title single, "I have that Old Feeling" was the first song that she recorded a music video. Alison Krauss and Union Station performed on the 1989 Newport Folk Festival.

Krauss was married to musician Pat Bergeson in 1997 and divorced in 2001. She has a son, Sam, born in 1999.
